How Medigap works
You generally remain enrolled in Original Medicare Parts A and B. Medicare pays its share of approved services first, then the Medigap policy pays according to its standardized benefits and contract terms. Medigap policies sold after 2005 do not include prescription drug coverage, so a separate Part D plan may be needed.
Standardized plan letters
Policies with the same plan letter generally have the same standardized core benefits, regardless of insurer. Premiums, underwriting practices, rate history, household discounts, customer service, and availability can differ.
Timing matters
Your federal Medigap open enrollment period generally begins the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B and lasts six months. Nevada law also provides an annual birthday enrollment period for current policyholders and, beginning October 1, 2025, expanded access for qualifying Medicare beneficiaries under age 65.
